MARKETING SKILLS

The market for automotive spares is huge. A number of companies in South Africa import and sell new motor parts, but very few of them specialise in a particular make of vehicle. By choosing to specialise, this enables them to carry a much larger range of spares for a particular vehicle.

The decision to specialise in Honda, BMW and Mercedes Benz vehicles came after much market research and investigation. The popularity of these vehicles has increased substantially over recent years and there is great demand for replacement parts. The businesses run an extensive marketing campaign, including publications like Autotrader, Freeway, Junkmail, local newspapers and regional papers such as the Daily News and the Mercury. They also employ staff whose sole responsibility is to distribute pamphlets. They distribute in excess of 10 000 pamphlets each month.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

CHALLENGES FACED:

The motor industry is ever evolving in South Africa. The present climate is no exception. Sparesboyz have always listened to constant talk in the industry and tried to engineer solutions to prevent rather than repair problems. The development of the range of products available to the customer. By adding new products to this range and not adding to your overheads in general has been one way of facing challenges. More accurate systems of determining their customer’s needs have been another.

John Hunt and Paul Shanon both believe that the beauty about Africa is their unique ability to solve problems. They and their company strive and are motivated by this. “

KEY FACTORS OF SUCCESS:

The Entrpreneurs attribute their success to constantly remaining innovative and responsive in the industry they operate in. Versatility is key in their environment and the need to provide diverse good quality end products at quick turn-around times, with no minimum quantity required, are key to remaining the supplier of choice.

They believe that the people of the community and proudly attributes a major part of the business’ success to the dedicated, loyal and hard-working staff in his employ.
Round pegs for round holes. Key areas need key personnel. The identification of these areas and facilitation of training of staff to fill these positions has been a major factor in our success. We are a team and energy link in the chain is vital to out success.
Constant training for all members to the team is vital. Listening to all the input from all members is even more vital to them.
Lastly, the ability to empower our company via listening to “constructive criticism” about our organization (complaints).

These are the company’s basic “Keys”.

For the company in particular this has resulted in our spares business offering the range of customers from private individuals, Panel beaters , Assessors, workshops etc. etc.
The Freedom to choose the right part to match their requirement, price and quality.
They offer
-Used
-New original
-Aftermarket
As well as the ability to source any part from the network set-up over the last 20 years of being in the business.

There are very few financial houses that are willing to take a chance on an entrepreneur. This is where the role of Business Partners is highly appreciated in providing the capital needed when growth called for it. The name speaks for itself.

JOB CREATION

The main focus of the company is to enrich all team members’ lives by stimulating the     growth of our sole provider “the company”. All employees have started at the basic entry level and with the help of the company have grown in all areas of the company. This helps stability and prevents skills loss in the organization.

Training is constant and growth throughout all areas of the company is positive, resulting in happy, successful workers “Top to Bottom”.
A present they have approximately
-21 Employees in the Workshop
-6 Employees in Sales
-8 Employees in Admin

About 80% of their Managers started as basic labourers.
This is the result of constant growth and forward movement of a motivated company.

The Entrepreneurs John Hunt and Paul Shanon have sound management skills which are borne out by the smooth running of their business operations. They are charismatic leaders who are in full control of their staff and business. They enjoys an excellent informal relationship with their staff and continue to empower them. They are very disciplined when it comes to planning and organizing their business activities as this is done on a daily basis.

EXPANSION PROGRAM

The Entrepreneurs are enthusiastic about the future. At present their expansion programme is well structured and based on solid research.

They believe that not all expansion is outwardly based. (Development of future product/brands)’ but more inwardly based. Tightening up of all the systems and the facilitating of a more productive/ cost effective “supply chain”.

They call it our “multi prong” approach. “Set your sails for storms”.
This allows for solid forward growth and at worst, having to move goals only slightly.

It is their intention to grow both our business and our team members to their full potential. Fun and profit is how they best describe their companies.
